Rihanna for River Island

Rihanna has debuted her 120- piece collection in collaboration with River Island co-designed by Adam Selman at London’s Fashion Week today! The collection encompasses Spring (which hits stores on the 5th of March), and Summer (arriving in May). Find out the prices of some of the pieces in her collection (here). Rihanna’s style team for the show and her own personal look consists of her talented stylist Mel Ottenberg, her long-time make up artist Mylah Morales, manicurist Jenny Longworth, and Ursula Stephen was on hair duty. The models walking in Rihanna’s Collection wore “Ruby Woo” lipstick from MAC Cosmetics, which Rihanna also wore during the Grammys. Find out more on Rihanna’s lip colour and purchase it (here).

For the show, Rihanna wore a black slim-fitted dress and black ankle strap sandals from Manolo Blahnik. Her diamond necklace is designed by Kentshire.

Here’s what fashion director of ELLE UK, Anne-Marie Curtis (who styled Rihanna for her upcoming April 2013 cover in ELLE Magazine) had to say when asked to give a descriptive verdict on Rihanna’s collection:

‘Aside from a nod to street style in the denim section, the collection was an ode to all things high fashion. Think Eighties Norma Kamali meets Alexander Wang luxe sportswear. From fluid jersey dresses to sweatshirts to all-in-ones and varying length skirts almost exclusively in a navy, black and white palette, there are myriad options here for even the most discerning fashion eye. Stand-out items include a black jersey column evening dress, a brilliantly cut bra top, a navy cropped sweatshirt, and a properly fabulous denim jumpsuit.

My personal favourite, if I had to choose one thing, is a jersey skirt that has a silk shirt attached with sleeves that tie at the waist (less complicated than it sounds!). I spotted at least half a dozen pieces I would not only happily feature in the fashion pages of ELLE but also things I am desperate to get my hands on and wear.

‘Rihanna really does have a great eye for fashion and the attention to details and styling elevated the collection to proper collector’s item status. I shall be joining the queue on 5 March to get my hands on a few pieces and I advise you do too. Rihanna’s all grown up and it’s a very good look.’

Rihanna speaks on her line:

“I have wanted to design my own fashion line for a very long time. Designing clothes for young sassy personalities is what i wanted to do. British high street has the most fashionable kids in the UK. I feel like high end designers are designed by these kids. Why not go to the source when you want something new, fresh? That’s why I went to River Island.”

Co-designer for the line, Adam Selman spoke with Vogue UK about Rihanna’s designs. He said this:

“This collection is very based upon Ri’s style and her mood – so it’s evolved a lot. There were things that she couldn’t find in the shops – for example simple, black, beautiful dresses, so she created her own. She was really interested in how things sit on the models and how they’re cut. This all comes from her – it’s very personal. She’s at the top of her game right now in terms of her career and in herself. She’s in a really good place.”

Selman describes the collection as “urban-inspired, unfussy with a hint of uptown” and is targeted at “cool hip girls who aren’t super thin”. He admitted that the pair did have a few differences when working together – something he believes improved the overall results:

“There were times when I said to her, ‘Ri you’ve got trust me on this.’ Then she’d put her foot down and I’d have to let it go,” he said. “Other times, she’d go with me. You can’t always change or read someone’s mind. A little tension is good though. We made a good team – there was never any shouting or screaming.”

Vogue UK also revealed that Rihanna and Adam will began working on her next collection for River Island. This collection will be for the brands’ Autumn/Winter 2013-14 Collection.

Hitman x Trapstar: Behind the Scenes

Rihanna was spotted working hard backstage at her clothing line’s debut at London Fashion Week with Mel Ottenberg and Adam Selman. Not one to sit and let everyone else do the ‘heavy lifting’ , she actively took part in getting her models prepared and ensuring that they had the perfect look to bring out the best in her well-put together designs. During this process she wore a strapback cap designed by Trapstar in Collaboration with Hitman. Be sure to watch the footage featuring Rihanna’s Trapstar hat (here).

More info on Rihanna’s Trapstar Hat:

Trapstar co-founder and creative director, Mikey also elaborated on the hook up between the streetwear label and the video game.

“We just felt like it fitted. It was an organic thing because it’s traditionally a dark game and we’re traditionally a dark brand. We don’t follow any rules.” The new range features the classic black with a hint of red colour ways, both of which are signatures for Hitman’s agent 47 and Trapstar’s core cut and sew pieces.

Trapstar has come a long way since it began life in 2006 as a small urban fashion start up specialising in cool and edgy street wear. Having steadily gone from strength to strength, the label now counts A$AP Rocky, model Cara Delevingne, and none other than the original good girl gone bad Rihanna as celebrity fans. “Rihanna is a famous version of the type of girls who support our brand and that are that take no sh*t type of girl” quips Mikey. –Sabotage Times

Rihanna for River Island | Manolo Blahnik | Trapstar

After the show, Rihanna headed out to celebrate with her BFF Melissa and the ever so fashionable Cara Delevingne at London’s Box Nightclub. She wore her same attire that consisted of a dress that she designed for her River Island Collection and her Manolo Blahnik “Chaos” Sandals. As was mentioned earlier in this post, her diamond necklace is by Kentshire. Rihanna is quite fond of eyewear from the brand, Super. She went with their Classic Francis frames that were hand made in Italy with Zeiss Lens. The company debuted in 2007 with this very pair. We covered the concept piece that Melissa wore (here) yesterday, but Rihanna has worn another!

A better view of Rihanna’s Trapstar Jacket:

Rihanna is no stranger to these made-to-order concept pieces from Trapstar. She was spotted in their Python Bomber (here) at the Laker’s Game with Chris Brown just last year. This crocodile embossed biker jacket in particular has a structured fit in the color black.

In the photo above Rihanna has her gal pals in tow, as she walks the streets of London. Cara, who was just recently one of Jeremy Scott’s models for New York Fashion Week, fittingly wore a jacket from his “American Indian” 2013 Collection in collaboration with Adidas Originals. If you would like to see her jacket and more from that collection, see the editorial (here). She paired this with denim cut-offs, a Gucci Beverly Hills shirt and thigh-high boots. Melissa wore her Trapstar Jacket and a BOY London sweatshirt, which you can get all the info on (here).
