Rihanna Covers Jewel Magazine’s August 2006 Issue:

Rihanna has covered several magazines over the years. However, seven years ago Rihanna covered Jewel Magazine’s August 2006 issue with a very unique theme. The cover and editorial spread took readers back in history as she channeled legendary singers, Dororthy Dandridge, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Diana Ross. In this week’s installment of Vintage RiRi, we’ll be giving you the rundown on what she wore for this shoot.

In this look from the editorial spread that was also featured on the cover of Jewel Magazine, Rihanna channels Dorothy Dandridge’s November 1954 LIFE Magazine cover. Dorothy was the first African American to make the cover of that particular magazine. Rihanna wore a flower that belonged to her stylist for this shoot along with a Black Peasant Blouse from Circa Now in New York. Dorothy was all about showing her gorgeous shoulders and accenting her look with simplistic jewelry. Rihanna accessorized with Black Jet Earrings and a Ball Bracelet from Dorian Webb along with a Pearl Necklace from the now closed, Eva’s Village Vintage Fashion and Art Shop.

For this look, Rihanna embodied Eleanora Fagan, better known as Billie Holiday. Billie Holiday was often photographed wearing beautiful gardenias in her hair. Rihanna too worked this signature detail in her photo by wearing Daily Blossom’s White Gardenias. Rihanna’s Cream Silk Bias Cut Gown is from Tahir Vintage Clothing. The boutique has now closed that was once located in New York. The Pearl Bracelet and Earrings she wore were designed by Dorian Webb. The Pearl Necklace she wore is another piece from the now closed, Eva’s Village Vintage Fashion and Art Shop. This look was completed with Cream Opera Gloves by La Crasia Gloves and Samantha Bronze Latticework Shoes.

These women laid the groundwork for me. They never let anyone tell them no. If they hadn’t broken down barriers, I wouldn’t be here making music I love –Rihanna

Rihanna was glowing in this shot as she portrayed the late, Lena Horne. Lena always wore a bright smile whenever she was photographed and Rihanna did a great job capturing her warm-hearted personality. The outfit for this photo, channels Lena’s look during her 1943 hit, “Stormy Weather”. Rihanna’s Black Polka Dot Dress with Sheer Sleeves was another piece from Tahir Vintage Clothing. By way of jewelry, she wore Dorian Webb’s Pearl Cluster Necklace, Eva’s Village Vintage Fashion and Art Shop’s Rhinestone Spray Earrings and Studio Dee Services’ Red Bangle Bracelet. Rihanna completed this look with Fishnet Hosiery from Bra Tenders and Vintage Miu Miu Black Open-Toe Pumps.

In the last photo of her spread, Rihanna stepped into the shoes of living legend, Diana Ross! Picking up on her love of a draping boa and sparkling sequin gowns, Rihanna captured the 1960’s era of Diana Ross and The Supremes. Rihanna wore her stylist’s boa along with Eva’s Village Vintage Fashion and Art Shop’s Blue Sequin Sheath Dress. She accessorized with Blue Metallic Leather Gloves from La Crasia Gloves, Bra Tenders’ Blue Sparkle Hosiery and Bakers Gold Pumps. Rihanna also wore Dorian Webb’s Jet Earrings.
