Rihanna attends Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards:
Rihanna was honored with yet another award on June 7th when she attended the taping of Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards. The show aired on Spike TV on the 11th and Rihanna was presented with her first pair of Mantlers by actor/comedian Kevin Hart. She was honored as “Most Desirable Woman” at the ceremony.
With all of the hype surrounding her beautiful custom-made gown at the Fashion Icon Award at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards that Monday, everyone was eager to see what she would wear! Rihanna actually went vintage for the event. We got to have a conversation with the curator behind the vintage find to give you some inside details!
Rihanna wore a beautiful dress designed by John Galliano that dates back to his 1997-1998 collection (similar model pictured above). The vintage find was nabbed at Elizabeth Mason’s boutique, The Paper Bag Princess. Elizabeth shared with me that Jahleel Weaver from Rihanna’s stylist team, headed up by Mel Ottenberg was very specific about what Rihanna was looking for to attend the awards ceremony. She wanted something simple, a slip dress. Elizabeth actually designs these kind of dresses and had in mind a type of dress that would channel legendary actress, Elizabeth Taylor in her 1958 film, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Surprisingly, that is EXACTLY the reference Rihanna had in mind!
For our readers that aren’t familiar with the 50’s classic, Elizabeth made a daring choice for that time period to wear nothing more than her white slip — a move that was far from common. In fact, men themselves weren’t seen in undershirts during that time. But, fearlessly, Elizabeth performed in her slip and did so beautifully — A look so simple and so effortless, yet it left its mark. This, is what Rihanna aimed to do, and we all know in true Rihanna fashion — she did just that!
Elizabeth revealed to me that this black dress is asymmetrical at the hip, giving the piece it’s unique shape. What was the most interesting part of my discussion with Elizabeth was finding out just where the dress came from. Rihanna’s silk bias cut John Galliano dress belonged to a 96-year old woman who has since passed away. The woman was a fashionista in her time and lived an incredible life. In fact, she didn’t own any casual clothes! She was a long-time client with Elizabeth Mason and they’ve pulled racks upon racks of fabulous pieces from her. Rihanna wore this 96-year old’s dress WELL! How amazing!
With such an effortless gown, Rihanna definitely had to pick the right shoes to round off her look without overpowering it. She chose her favorite Manolo Blahnik Chaos Sandals.
Her $725.00 100mm sandals feature an open toe with a single band at toe, closed back and posted adjustable ankle strap. She also wore a “Bridgetown” Necklace around her neck. This piece is from Mala by Patty Rodriguez. You can show support for your own hometown with this Where You From? $105.00 Gold Plated Necklace. Rihanna has also worn her Can I Get Your Number? Necklace on several occasions.
Rihanna’s best friend Melissa, was also there on her big night. She wore a cute dress to the event designed by Opening Ceremony. Her Starling Embellished Dress retails at $525.00. M$$’ mint crepe dress features a square neckline and bronze floral beading. You can rent the dress and/or purchase it in its skirt form. Melissa completed her look with Spring 2013 holographic Manolo Blahnik sandals. Rihanna was spotted in the same pair last summer.
